Kingdom of L'Orn Map

Description

So a game that I used to play, Heroes of Might and Magic, was re-released on Steam and I purchased it without hesitation.  Turns out it's not quite the same.  You can't generate random maps like you used to be able to and lets just say it's not the full package game that I loved so much.  However this version of the game, came with a separate map builder.  So for the land of L'Orn, the land in which Jude and friends reside, I used the software to build a map.  I then drew it out, colored, and put down proper placement of villages, castles, foresty area, and the such.  The area at the top right that cuts off, is the border to another kingdom that remains unnamed at this time.  But for now, this is the Kingdom of L'Orn.  Please enjoy.

Update:  The castle resides near the edge of a cliff.  It's hard to interpret on a flat map.  And any of the dark airbrushed green area is trees.  That should name anything that isn't clear on the next page.

I like the coloration and size of the land mass. The roadways and fresh water sources are well thought out and decently placed. The city/village sizes are appropriate and would support a feudal kingdom well through farming, textile production, etc. As far as 'vision' goes, you knew exactly what you wanted, and drew it out nicely. It's very original in form and appearance.

I worry though, that with only one road in or out, that the capitol risks being cut off from the rest of the kingdom if someone were to lay siege to it, especially with a city so nearby, to the right on the map. All they would really need it to build a bridge across the large waterway. Perhaps they have a large port with a magnificent navy? This is not a critique of your drawing or design, just an 'out loud' thought on the inner workings of your country.

The only real "criticism" I have is that the map has no legend to tell us what each structure represents or how great a distance is represented. Nothing is labeled either, for city names, or if coastal cities have ports, and where farm land or forests are situated. As a viewer, I can make guesses, but I can't be sure. This would go under 'technique,' I feel, and is a part of cartography that is needed.

All in all, I really like this. It looks like something I would use in Dungeons and Dragons, perhaps a rough map of the kingdom the players are in for them to use to get around.

Really good job!
